Frequently Asked Questions about Test Data Generator TDG

FAQ's to TDG

  1. Q: I downloaded the software and the first thing it asked for was a user name and login. No instructions regarding what was expected were provided. What's to do now?
A: TDG starts with the login mask because it is a software which generates data in databases. So it's not a bad idea to start with connecting to a database.
There are two cases to proceed:
First, select an entry of the combo-box 'Database'. This box shows the currently installed ODBC-driven databases on your machine. Please fill in the appropriate user name and the corresponding password and press the 'Enter'-key.
Second, if you don't want to connect to a database, just activate the check-box 'No DB connection' and press the 'Enter'-key.
However, in both cases you are led to the 'Info' mask, which gives you information about your current connection status. Then you can proceed with building up scripts or execute them.
Note: If you aren't sure, what's to do at any stage of operation, just press the Help-key (F1) and the Help-system appears. This gives you normally all needed information to continue with your work.

  2. Q: When I'm starting a 'sequence', then TDG jumps to the 'session'-mask. Why does this happen?
A: A sequence is a 'wrapper' around a number of sessions. Only a session contains all the information in order to generate data in a database table. Thus, during the execution of a sequence, TDG loads every session and executes it individually.

  3. Q: When I'm using the 'Detail'-tab of the session mask, I can't find any information about the referential integrity to the master table. Why?
A: In this case your database seems to have not applied referential integrity between your master table and your detail table. To make sure, please contact your database administrator.

  4. Q: When I'm working on a field of a database table to define my test data, the left portion of the area 'Working column' remains unaccessible. What is it good for?
A: Once you connect to a database and TDG has analysed the database table automatically, so the data type, the size of the column and the 'not null'-information is stated from the database and may not be changed.
In case of building up a script manually without using a database, this area is accessible because you have to define these information about each database field.

  5. Q: Is it possible to execute other SQL-statements than the 'select * from...'-statement within the 'data'-tab?
A: Yes. You can execute in this tab every single statement you want. TDG distinguishes between statements starting with the phrase 'select ...' and others. The first group fills the table window below, the others don't fill the table window.
